Diada de Saint Jordi (St. George’s Day)

Saint George’s day commemorates de day the saint died on April 23rd in the year 303. Traditionally in Catalonia this is the day dedicated to love and lovers and since the XV century it is customary for the man to give a red rose, “blood red,” to the beloved. Since the beginning of the XX century presenting a book to the man became popularized as this is also the Day dedicated to Books.

On this day throughout Catalonia authors present their books and prices are awarded to the most recent and popular publications. It is impressive to see crowds of people of all ages pay homage to books and their authors. It is an indication that the paper book, despite all nay-sayers, is not on its death throes.
